In an e-mail dated October 2.....We are Historic Troop 9. We meet every Wed. evening from 7:30 to 8:30 at our own separate Scout Hut located behind Bryker Woods School on West 33rd just East of Kerbey Lane. This is in the area just west of Seton Hospital with easy access from Mopac. Our Sponsor is Bryker Woods School PTA.

We currently have 19 active members. Our older Scouts are in the process of starting a related Venture Crew. We have five Scout finishing their Eagles. We go on a campout each month. Last year we went backpacking twice, rock climbing and canoeing. In late May we usually have a week-long troop adventure (2000-Mexico, 2001-Big Bend, 2002-Arkansas/Buffalo River). We have attended summer camp at Lost Pines in Bastrop every year for the 32 years of its existance. We sent one Scout to the National Order of the Arrow Conference in 2000 and three Scouts to the National Jamboree in 2001.

This past summer of 2002 we had four Scouts attend the Northern Tier Canoe Base in Atitokan, Ontario, Canada for a 10 canoe trip in the Canadian wilderness and five Scouts attend the Junior Leader Training camp. We had one Scout on Lost Pines summer camp staff. Our troop is active in the Order of the Arrow.

We are available for Webelos II's to visit and attend joint campouts during the year. Scoutmaster - Joe Jones SM 5 years, ASM 2 years, Woodbadge, Eagle
9 active adult Assistant Scoutmasters.

We are a small, fast moving troop. We would like to bigger than we are currently but do not expect to have membership much over 30 or so. We promote boy leadership in whatever form available and this learning process is in action eventhough it may appear as chaos at any given time. We tend to less regimentation or regid rules except in cases of safety. Our main goal is to follow and learn from the Scout program and have as much fun as we can without huring ourselves. This applies to adults as well as boys. If you are not looking to have fun, we are not your troop.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any more questions.

Yours in Scouting Adventure,
Joe Jones

Some other comments....(October 02) - Dear Blue Wolf Patrol,
I encourage Ronnie and John to join in with their thoughts, too, but I wanted to give you a short update on our experience of camping this past weekend with Troop 454 at the Faulkner Ranch near Llano (and on the Llano River) this past weekend. I'm hoping that those of you who camped with Troop 49 will share your experiences, too.
Ronnie and the boys (Stuart, John R. and Grant) all arrived at about 1:30 p.m., I believe. They set up tents and built a small dam in the Llano River in the afternoon. The Scouts were working on various merit badges including emergency preparedness, though our boys weren't really involved in that activity. The Scouts planned and cooked their meals for their fellow Scouts and for all of the Webelos on the campout. It seems there were about a couple dozen Scouts and about 9 or 10 Webelos and about 10-12 adults (some Scout parents, some Weblos.... maybe half and half).... Ronnie and John, correct me here if I'm off. The parents ate in the same area, but planned and cooked separately. There were leftovers from the parents food for those boys who didn't get enough of their dinner (grilled cheese sandwiches, tamales and carrots). The parents ate beef and chicken fajitas, with refried beans and great garnishings.
I was pleased with how welcoming the Scouts were for the Webelos. On their own, they went around at dinner and introduced themselves, told a little about themselves and about the Troop and later told stories and jokes. Later, at the campfire, the boys and then parents all went around and introduced themselves and described their favorite thing/activity on the campout so far.
Breakfast in the morning was cooked for everyone (boys and adults)... I think it was cooked by both boys and adults. Texas size french toast, bacon, juice... it was another good meal. This was followed by a short nondenominational service led by Ronnie (which was well done and seemed especially appropriate from the pretty view of the Llano River). Everyone shared in KP duty cleaning dishes and breaking down the common area (which included a nice portable tent (about 12' x 25'??). And, then we broke down our tents and headed home.
There seemed to me to be a good mix of both boy lead activities and parental participation. I think there were lots of activities going on this weekend for the Scouts (including taking PSATs on Sat. a.m.) and the weather wasn't totally inviting Friday night and Sat. a.m. when folks would have been heading out...unless you really love camping in the rain. As it turned, out we didn't get any rain. Those that came out Friday said that it only rained from about 3 a.m. to 6 a.m. so they were never out in the rain. Anyway, given all of that, I guess the attendance on the campout from the boys was pretty respectable.
Ronnie and John, let us know your thoughts.
For those who attended the Troop 49 campout, let us know about that, too! Thanks!
Tom

Some other comments.... Calling all Webelos looking for a scout troop. Come to Troop 49! So what is special about us?
Crestview Baptist Church sponsors us and gives us our own dedicated scout room. Come by the church at 7600 Woodrow Avenue up near Northcross Mall and check out a meeting any Tuesday night at 7:00 PM. During our meetings, we work on scout advancement and we have fun.
We are boy-led! Finally, we have pushed the grown ups aside and run things ourselves! Each year we have a planning meeting, run by us, and each week we have a Patrol Leaders Council Meeting, run by us, to plan what we want to do.
Our troop is great. We win the Quality Unit and the National Camping Award every year.
We camp—a lot. Check out our web site to learn more about us:
